What is Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)?

Inflammatory bowel disease is a group of chronic inflammatory conditions affecting the digestive tract. The two main types are Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. These conditions cause inflammation and damage to the gastrointestinal lining, leading to symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss, and fatigue.

  • Chronic diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain and cramping
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Reduced appetite
  • Fever
  • Urgent need to have a bowel movement
  • Joint pain
  • Skin problems
  • Intestinal strictures
  • Abscesses
  • Fistulas
  • Malnutrition
  • Osteoporosis
  • Anemia
  • Colon cancer (in some cases)

You may be at risk for developing Inflammatory Bowel Disease if you:

  • Have a family history of IBD
  • Are of Ashkenazi Jewish descent
  • Are of Caucasian descent
  • Smoke tobacco
  • Live in an urban area
  • Are exposed to certain environmental factors
  • Have a history of viral or bacterial infections

How is it treated?

The treatment for Diverticulitis may involve one or more of the following approaches:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications (e.g., corticosteroids, aminosalicylates)
  • Immune system suppressors (e.g., azathioprine, methotrexate)
  • Biologics (e.g., infliximab, adalimumab)
  • Antibiotics
  • Anti-diarrheal medications
  • Pain relievers
  • Iron supplements (for anemia)

  • Surgery to remove a portion of the intestine
  • Surgery to create an ileostomy or colostomy
  • Surgery to drain abscesses or repair fistulas

  • Managing stress
  • Regular exercise
  • Smoking cessation (if applicable)

It's important to note that IBD is a complex condition with two main types, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, and individual experiences and treatment plans can vary. Patients should consult with healthcare professionals for a personalized assessment and treatment plan tailored to their specific type of IBD and individual health status.
