When is intensive care needed?

An immediate call for attention is made to the ICU staff if the patient’s condition is similar to any of the situations listed below

  • An obstructed or threatened airway
  • Respiratory arrest
  • A respiratory rate between 8 and 40 breaths per minute
  • Cardiac arrest
  • A pulse that’s less than 40 or greater than 140 beats per minute
  • Repeated or extended seizures

The intensive care is offered to a patient with these or another cause that raises concerns.

What Does ICU Care Involve?

A detailed check on the vitals of a patient is a must in ICU care. Each ICU at MGMCH is equipped to facilitate thorough monitoring of the patient’s heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, blood oxygen levels, urinary output, and temperature. Typical equipment in an ICU. A basic ICU contains equipment for monitoring all of the vitals mentioned above. Apart from that, an ICU requires equipment like

  • Feeding tubes
  • Catheters to drain urine
  • Ventilators to help patients breath
  • Drain tubes to remove blood or fluid buildup
  • Intravenous (IV) tubes to provide fluid, nutrition, and medication

Common drugs in an ICU. Numerous patients in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are administered analgesic medications or sedatives. These substances aim to alleviate symptoms associated with their medical condition or any discomfort induced by the medical apparatus.

Close monitoring. There is typically one nurse for every one or two patients in the ICU. This lets the ICU staff closely monitor all patients closely.

What to Expect as a Visitor

Paying a visit to a cherished family member in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) can prove to be quite daunting and emotionally challenging. Nevertheless, there exist measures one can take to ready oneself for such an encounter.

Understand the visiting restrictions

ICUs in the United Kingdom generally maintain adaptable visiting hours, although several impose restrictions to prevent the spread of contagions. It is advisable to examine the visiting hours of the specific ICU to acquaint oneself with any prevailing restrictions.

Certain ICUs may impose constraints on the quantity of visitors permitted. Therefore, visitors should coordinate their visits with the patient's family and friends to prevent overwhelming their loved ones and to adhere to the ICU's guidelines.

Protect yourself and others

The ICU will request that each visitor must cleanse or sanitise their hands to avert potential infection. They will also limit the items that can be bought with a visitor.

If a visitor is unwell or sick, they must refrain from visiting the ICU. The patients are in critical condition, and one must avoid jeopardising their health.

Know what you may see

A patient in the ICU will be linked to various devices through tubes and wires. They might appear drowsy or disoriented due to certain medications, making a visit emotionally charged.

What to Expect as a Patient

The patient's experience in intensive care will vary depending on the reason for admission. The ICU represents a highly functional operational environment situated within a sterile area, replete with a plethora of equipment. The cacophony of sounds, distinct odours, various machines, and the heightened level of activity can prove overwhelming for both patients and their visitors.

Constant digital monitoring is undertaken through various devices and by the vigilant staff. The patient becomes well-acquainted with the attending nurses and doctors. Provided the patient is awake and communicative, they retain the autonomy to make decisions regarding their care. If the patient is unconscious, sedated, or unable to make decisions, their immediate family assumes the responsibility of making decisions on their behalf. Alternatively, in emergencies, the ICU staff may need to make decisions in the best interest of the patient. Patients undergoing treatment with sedatives, painkillers, and other medications may experience drowsiness. However, the ICU staff diligently ensures that the patient is kept as comfortable as possible.
