What is ENT?

In an ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) department, a variety of procedures are performed to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the head and neck, particularly the auditory, nasal, and vocal systems.

Here are some common procedures

  • Otoscopy - Examination of the ear canal and tympanic membrane using an otoscope to identify infections, perforations, or blockages.
  • Rhinolaryngoscopy - A procedure using a flexible or rigid endoscope to visualise the nasal passages and throat for abnormalities.
  • Audiometry - Hearing tests to evaluate auditory function and identify hearing loss.
  • Imaging Studies - CT or MRI Scans: Used to assess structural abnormalities, tumours, or infections in the head and neck.

  • Tonsillectomy - Surgical removal of the tonsils, often performed to treat recurrent infections or obstructive sleep apnea.
  • Adenoidectomy - Removal of the adenoids, usually done alongside tonsillectomy in children with chronic nasal obstruction or infections.
  • Myringotomy - Surgical incision in the eardrum to relieve pressure from fluid buildup or to insert ear tubes for chronic otitis media.
  • Septoplasty - Surgical correction of a deviated nasal septum to improve breathing and alleviate nasal obstruction.
  • Rhinoplasty - Cosmetic or functional surgery to reshape the nose for aesthetic improvement or to correct breathing issues.
  • Laryngectomy - Surgical removal of part or all of the larynx, often performed for laryngeal cancer.
  • Thyroidectomy - Removal of part or all of the thyroid gland, often performed for thyroid cancer or significant goitres.
  • Parotidectomy - Surgical removal of the parotid gland, typically for tumours or infections.
