What is Gynecologic Oncology?

In a Gynecologic Oncology department, various procedures are performed to diagnose, treat, and manage cancers of the female reproductive system.

Here are some common procedures

  • Pelvic Examination - A thorough physical examination to assess the reproductive organs and detect abnormalities.
  • Pap Smear - Collecting cervical cells to screen for cervical cancer and precancerous changes.
  • Colposcopy - A detailed examination of the cervix, vagina, and vulva using a magnifying instrument, often following abnormal Pap results.
  • Endometrial Biopsy - A procedure to collect tissue from the lining of the uterus to evaluate for cancer or hyperplasia.
  • Imaging Studies
    • Transvaginal Ultrasound - Used to visualise the ovaries and uterus to detect masses or abnormalities.
    • CT/MRI Scans - Imaging to assess the extent of cancer and involvement of surrounding tissues.

  • Hysterectomy - Surgical removal of the uterus, which may include:
    • Total Hysterectomy - Removal of the uterus and cervix.
    • Radical Hysterectomy - Removal of the uterus, cervix, surrounding tissues, and sometimes part of the vagina.
  • Oophorectomy - Surgical removal of one or both ovaries, often performed alongside hysterectomy.
  • Salpingectomy - Removal of one or both fallopian tubes, sometimes done in conjunction with oophorectomy.
  • Tumour Debulking - Surgical removal of as much tumour mass as possible, often performed in advanced stages of cancer.
  • Pelvic and Para-aortic Lymphadenectomy - Removal of lymph nodes in the pelvic area and near the aorta to check for cancer spread.

  • Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy - Administering chemotherapy directly into the abdominal cavity to treat cancers like ovarian cancer.
  • External Beam Radiation Therapy - Targeted radiation treatment to shrink tumours or eliminate cancer cells, often used as part of a multimodal treatment plan.
