Advanced Surgical Solutions

Along with StealthStation navigation, the O-arm system provides enhanced 3D 360* visibility and surgical feedback. It also:

  • Provides current patient data in the OR Enables advanced surgical approaches like MIS
  • Provides additional information in challenging procedures, like heavier patients or patients with unusual anatomy1,2,3
  • Automatic registration keeps the process simple

The O-arm system also offers options for workflow efficiencies, such as:

  • In procedures where pre-op axial/coronal/sagittal slice data is necessary, it may be possible to use the O-arm system to provide the initial data set
  • Eliminating the need to send patients to be scanned in radiology

FAQs

Most people think of neurosurgeons as brain surgeons, and this is true! However, neurosurgeons are more broadly defined as highly trained medical specialists who diagnose and treat disorders of the entire nervous system – including our brain, spinal cord, skull and the spine (bony vertebral column). Of course, they operate on the brain, but they actually spend more of their time helping patients with spine and peripheral nerve disorders.

It may be hard to believe, but neurosurgeons also treat "common" diseases like back pain, migraines, pinched nerves, epilepsy, stroke and chronic pain. You do not need to have a life-threatening condition to see a neurosurgeon. In fact, a neurologist is your best bet if you show any of the symptoms below:

  • Numbness and pain Persistent numbness, especially in the extremities, is a symptom of sensory nerve damage. Sensory nerves are found under the skin and in the muscles. They carry information back to the brain. If the nerves fail to do so correctly, then numbness, burning, tingling or pain occurs.
  • A weak grip The hand can lose the ability to grasp objects because of pain or loss of sensation. Usually, this is caused when the wrist swells as a result of injury or illness. The swollen wrist constricts the median nerve, causing pain, tingling or loss of sensation. This condition is known as carpal tunnel which develops gradually. To prevent worsening of the condition, a person should seek medical attention as soon as they notice even the smallest of symptoms. Along with this some brain pathology and Cervical pathology can also lead to weak grip. Your Neurosurgeon will be the best person to evaluate and diagnose your disease.
  • Persistent headaches When the head hurts for hours or days on end, it is time to see a neurosurgeon. Persistent headaches or migraines are usually accompanied by light sensitivity and nausea. Various brain pathologies (tumor, AVM, Haemorrhage, etc.) can also lead from mild to severe headaches. So it is better not to ignore them at all and see a neurosurgeon as soon as possible.
  • Impaired movement Clumsiness, tremors, shuffling and uncontrollable body movements are all types of impaired movement. These symptoms can be a result of a malfunction of the central nervous system or a side effect of medication or head trauma.
  • Seizures Most people picture seizures as violent convulsions and loss of consciousness. Often, they are milder and more subtle. A person may have a seizure while sitting perfectly still. A person who has suddenly started having seizures should seek a diagnosis and treatment as soon as possible.

Not necessarily. Your referring physician most likely believes that you have a disease or disorder which would benefit from diagnoses, testing and treatment by a neurosurgeon. The decision whether or not to recommend surgery is a complex one, best handled by your neurosurgeon and his/her team.

With minimally invasive techniques, patients experience less trauma and pain due to very minimal disruption of the musculature. Compared to more traditional surgical techniques, patients have minimal scarring because of very small incisions, faster recovery times, shorter hospital stays and can return to pre-surgery activity levels much more quickly.

Most patients recover quickly after brain tumor surgery and are able to leave the hospital after only a few days. Depending upon your functional abilities after surgery, our physical therapists and occupational therapists will evaluate you. In some instances, a short stay at a rehabilitation hospital near your home may be recommended. In addition to the discharge instructions you are given, it may be helpful to gather key information prior to discharge
