What is Clinical Haematology?

In a clinical haematology department, various procedures are performed to diagnose and treat blood disorders.

Here are some common procedures

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC) - A comprehensive test to evaluate red and white blood cells, haemoglobin levels, hematocrit, and platelets.
  • Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsy - Collecting bone marrow samples to diagnose conditions like leukaemia, anaemia, and other blood disorders.
  • Coagulation Studies - Tests such as prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) to assess blood clotting function.
  • Peripheral Blood Smear - Microscopic examination of blood cells to identify abnormalities.
  • Flow Cytometry - Used to analyse the characteristics of blood cells, often for leukaemia and lymphoma diagnosis.

  • Phlebotomy - Drawing blood for testing or therapeutic purposes, such as in polycythemia vera.
  • Transfusion Therapy - Administering blood products (red blood cells, platelets, plasma) to treat conditions like anaemia or bleeding disorders.
  • Iron Infusion - Administering iron directly into the bloodstream for patients with iron-deficiency anaemia.
  • Plateletpheresis - A procedure to separate and collect platelets from blood, often used for donors or certain medical conditions.
