What is Cardiology?

In a Cardiology department, a variety of procedures are performed to diagnose, treat, and manage cardiovascular conditions.

Here are some common procedures

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) - Recording the electrical activity of the heart to identify arrhythmias and other cardiac issues.
  • Echocardiogram - An ultrasound procedure that provides images of the heart’s structure and function, used to assess conditions like heart valve disease and cardiomyopathy.
  • Stress Testing - Evaluating heart function under physical stress, typically using a treadmill or medication to induce stress, to diagnose conditions like coronary artery disease.
  • Holter Monitoring - Continuous recording of heart rhythms over 24 to 48 hours to detect arrhythmias that may not appear during a standard ECG.
  • Cardiac Catheterization - Inserting a catheter into the heart's chambers through blood vessels to diagnose and sometimes treat cardiovascular conditions, including coronary artery disease.

  • Angioplasty and Stenting - A procedure to open narrowed coronary arteries using a balloon and place a stent to keep the artery open.
  • Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) - Surgical procedure to bypass blocked coronary arteries using grafts from other body parts.
  • Electrophysiology Studies (EPS) - Tests to evaluate the electrical activity of the heart, often used to diagnose arrhythmias.
  • Radiofrequency Ablation - A procedure to destroy abnormal electrical pathways in the heart that cause arrhythmias.

  • Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD) Placement - Inserting a device that monitors heart rhythms and delivers shocks if life-threatening arrhythmias are detected.
  • Pacemaker Placement - Implanting a device to help control abnormal heart rhythms.
  • Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) - A minimally invasive procedure to replace a narrowed aortic valve.

  • Lifestyle Counselling - Educating patients on heart-healthy lifestyle changes, including diet, exercise, and smoking cessation.
  • Risk Assessment - Evaluating cardiovascular risk factors and providing recommendations for screening and prevention.
