Paediatric Hemato Oncology

About the Specialty

Pediatric Hematology Oncology is a super-specialty division of the Department of Medical Oncology.

cardiology-about

It deals with all the blood related diseases in children, like anemia (low haemoglobin), thrombocytopenia (low platelets), coagulopathy (bleeding disorders including haemophilia). It also includes all types of blood cancers including lymphomas and leukemia.

Bone marrow transplant (Stem cell transplant) is a specialized therapy done for benign as well as malignant disorders in which the faulty bone marrow of the patient is replaced by healthy stem cells from bone marrow/peripheral blood of the donor. This procedure involves transplanting blood stem cells, which travel to the bone marrow where they produce new blood cells and promote growth of new marrow. It is the curative modality for many diseases. Bone marrow transplant is very skilled and complicated procedure which is available at very few centres in India.

The bone marrow transplant is indicated for the following conditions:

Benign disorders Malignant disorders
Thalassemia

High risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Eg. Ph positive ALL)

Sickle cell anemia

Acute myeloid leukemia

Aplastic anemia

Refractory and relapsed lymphoma

Inherited bone marrow failure syndromes

Relapsed/ Refractory leukemia

Primary immunodeficiency disorders

Relapsed or high risk pediatric solid tumors
