What is Nuclear Medicine?

In a Nuclear Medicine department, various procedures are performed using radioactive materials to diagnose and treat a variety of conditions, particularly those related to the thyroid, bones, and certain cancers.

Here are some common procedures

  • Radioactive Isotope Scanning
    • Bone Scintigraphy - Using a radioactive tracer to evaluate bone metabolism and detect conditions like fractures, infections, or tumours.
    • Thyroid Scintigraphy - Assessing thyroid function and morphology by visualising thyroid uptake of radioactive iodine or technetium.
    • PET Scan (Positron Emission Tomography) - A highly sensitive imaging technique that uses radioactive tracers to evaluate metabolic activity in tissues, particularly useful in cancer diagnosis and monitoring.
  • SPECT Imaging (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) - A specialised imaging technique that provides 3D images of functional processes in the body, often used for cardiac and neurological evaluations.
  • Gastrointestinal Tract Studies
    • HIDA Scan - Evaluating liver and gallbladder function by assessing the flow of a radioactive tracer
    • Gastric Emptying Study - Measuring how quickly food leaves the stomach using a radioactive tracer.

  • Radioactive Iodine Therapy - Administering radioactive iodine to treat hyperthyroidism or thyroid cancer by destroying overactive thyroid tissue or cancer cells.
  • Radiopharmaceutical Therapy - Using targeted radioactive substances to treat specific cancers (e.g., radium-223 for prostate cancer) or other conditions.

  • Pre-procedure Instructions - Educating patients on how to prepare for scans or therapies, including dietary restrictions or medication adjustments.
  • Post-procedure Monitoring - Observing patients after radioactive therapies for any immediate reactions and providing guidelines for safety precautions.

  • Radiation Safety Protocols - Ensuring compliance with safety standards to protect patients and staff from unnecessary radiation exposure.
