What is Neurosurgery?

In a Neurosurgery department, a variety of surgical procedures are performed to treat conditions affecting the brain, spine, and nervous system.

Here are some common procedures

  • Neuroimaging
    • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) - Detailed imaging to assess brain and spinal cord abnormalities.
    • Computed Tomography (CT) Scan - Rapid imaging for acute conditions like haemorrhages or fractures.
  • Lumbar Puncture (Spinal Tap) - Used to collect cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for analysis, helping diagnose infections, bleeding, or neurological disorders.

  • Craniotomy - Surgical opening of the skull to access the brain for tumour removal, treatment of aneurysms, or evacuation of hematomas.
  • Laminectomy - Removal of a portion of the vertebra (lamina) to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves, often performed for herniated discs or spinal stenosis.
  • Spinal Fusion - Surgical procedure to join two or more vertebrae to stabilise the spine, often used for degenerative disc disease or spinal instability.
  • Stereotactic Surgery - Minimally invasive technique using 3D imaging to target specific areas in the brain, often used for tumour biopsies or treatment of movement disorders (e.g., Parkinson’s disease).
  • Endoscopic Neurosurgery - Utilises small cameras and instruments inserted through tiny openings to perform surgeries within the brain or spine, reducing recovery time and complications.
  • Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) - Surgical implantation of a device that delivers electrical impulses to specific brain areas, used to treat conditions like Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, and dystonia.
  • Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) Shunt Placement -Involves placing a shunt to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid from the brain to the abdominal cavity, often used for conditions like hydrocephalus.
