What is Pulmonary Medicine?

In a Pulmonary Medicine department, a variety of procedures are performed to diagnose and manage conditions affecting the lungs and respiratory system.

Here are some common procedures

  • Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs) - A series of tests to measure lung volumes, capacities, and airflow, assessing conditions like asthma, COPD, and restrictive lung disease.
  • Bronchoscopy - A procedure using a flexible scope to visualize the airways and lungs, allowing for biopsy, removal of secretions, and evaluation of abnormalities.
  • Imaging Studies
    • Chest X-ray - Initial imaging to assess lung structures and identify abnormalities.
    • CT Scan - Detailed imaging for assessing lung nodules, interstitial lung disease, or pulmonary embolism.
  • Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) Analysis - Measurement of oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in arterial blood to evaluate respiratory function and gas exchange.
  • Sputum Analysis - Laboratory examination of sputum samples to identify infections or malignant cells.

  • Inhalation Therapy - Administering bronchodilators, corticosteroids, or other medications through nebulizers or inhalers for conditions like asthma and COPD.
  • Thoracentesis - A procedure to remove excess pleural fluid for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes.
  • Chest Tube Insertion - Placement of a tube to drain air (for pneumothorax) or fluid (for pleural effusion) from the pleural space.
  • Lung Biopsy - Obtaining lung tissue samples for pathological evaluation, which may be done via bronchoscopy or CT-guided needle biopsy.
  • Sleep Studies - Polysomnography to diagnose sleep-related breathing disorders, including sleep apnea.
