Emergency Medicine is a new specialty in India. Mahatma Gandhi Medical College & Hospital, Jaipur, is honored to have the first NMC recognized degree course in Rajasthan. At present we have 2 PG seats for the same. It has a bright future with good opportunities for its students.

The Department of Emergency Medicine at MGMCH, Jaipur prides itself on being a pioneer in patient care, education, and scientific research. The department is dedicated to providing world-class Emergency services to all its patients. We are equipped with supremely advanced Resuscitation Area and Emergency Operation Theater facilities and the best technology available in the world today.

Aims and Objectives

Providing high quality medical care to patients with life threatening, complex medical and surgical emergencies on account of accident, illness, trauma, abuse, poisoning, burns, snake bites, dog bites, electric shocks, etc and thus prevent loss of life & limb.

  • To provide quality patient care round the clock and under all situations in Emergency Medicine Department.
  • To provide quality teaching and training to the postgraduates of Emergency Medicine as well as of other specialities in emergency care.
  • To educate and train nurses and paramedics of Emergency Medicine and prehospital staff in providing optimal emergency and acute care.
  • To provide quality education to the undergraduate medical and paramedical students.

Facilities

24X7 Emergency Facilities - 24 Hours Emergency & Level 1 Trauma Services with state of art emergency unit with a dedicated triage area, trauma bay and cardiac emergency unit. Equipped with Ventilators, cardiac monitors, defibrillators, and other point-of-care testing equipment (POCT); Mobile X-ray unit, ABG, round-the-clock Radiology, pathology, and pharmacy.

  • Strict infection control policies and protocols.
  • Collaborative and comprehensive super specialists team comprising of Neuro, Cardio, Ortho, Nephron, Vascular, Plastic, Gastro, Urologist, critical care, and intensivists.

Emergency ICU

  • 6 fully equipped state-of-the-art intensive care beds with wall panels.
  • A qualified, experienced, and talented team of Emergency physicians for 24/7 services
  • Trained, Experienced, and caring nursing and technical staff.
  • Bedside X-ray, USG, ABG, infusion pumps, defibrillators, and dialysis points.

Resuscitation Area - This area is dedicated to the immediate care of patients and victims in cardiac arrest, airway, breathing and circulation compromise. The 'Resus' area has two resuscitation beds with all resuscitative equipment (monitors, defibrillators, airway, intubation & surgical equipment) available at an arm's distance including pediatric resuscitation kits. A patient maybe shifted to the Resus area from outside or from an area within the hospital or emergency department itself. All priority I patients are managed here.

Observation Beds There are 20 beds with monitors and dedicated staff in yellow zone and green zone.

Emergency medicine is a field of practice based on the knowledge and skills required for the prevention, diagnosis and management of the acute and urgent aspects of illness and injury affecting patients of all age groups with a full spectrum of undifferentiated physical and behavioral disorders. It is a specialty in which time is critical.

An emergency is commonly defined as any condition perceived by the prudent layperson, or someone on his or her behalf, as requiring immediate medical or surgical evaluation and treatment. The practice of emergency medicine has the primary mission of evaluating, managing and providing treatment to these patients with unexpected injury or illness.

If you love challenges of diagnosing, stabilizing and treating very sick patients in extremely short spans of time, then you will like EM. Do not choose EM just because someone else has advised you to do so. There is no point in working in a casualty or ER where emergency medicine is not established. Similarly, there is absolutely no point in taking career advice or comments from people who have no experience of working in EM. Only qualified emergency physicians who have worked in independent emergency departments know what it’s like to be working in EM and they are the best individuals to get advice from. Practice in EM demands excellent communication skills and knowledge of human psychology. An emergency physician has to deal, as well as establish rapport, with patients and their attenders who are in an extremely stressful situation of an unexpected emergency.

Quality emergency care is a fundamental individual right & should be available to all who seek it. The emergency medicine in India is rapidly evolving, with an increasing focus on improving infrastructure, training, and protocols to provide high-quality emergency care. Despite challenges such as inadequate funding and workforce shortages, emergency medicine in India has made significant strides in recent years. The future direction of emergency medicine in India includes the development of a standardized emergency care system, increasing public awareness of emergency services, and enhancing collaboration between emergency medicine and other specialties
