What is Interventional Radiology (IR)?

In an Interventional Radiology (IR) department, various minimally invasive procedures are performed using imaging guidance to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions.

Here are some common procedures

  • Fluoroscopy - Real-time imaging to guide various interventional procedures.
  • Ultrasound - Used for real-time imaging during procedures and for guiding biopsies.
  • CT or MRI-guided Biopsies - Taking tissue samples from tumours or abnormal growths using imaging for precision.

  • Angioplasty and Stenting - Opening narrowed blood vessels and placing stents to maintain vessel patency, often in the treatment of vascular disease.
  • Embolization - Blocking blood flow to abnormal blood vessels or tumours using materials like coils or particles.
  • Thrombectomy - Removing blood clots from veins or arteries, often used in cases of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.
  • Drainage Procedures - Placing catheters to drain abscesses, fluid collections, or bile in cases of biliary obstruction.
  • Percutaneous Cholecystostomy - Placing a tube to drain the gallbladder in cases of acute cholecystitis when surgery is not an option.

  • Central Venous Catheter Placement - Inserting catheters into large veins for long-term medication administration, nutrition, or dialysis.
  • Port Placement - Inserting a port for long-term access to the bloodstream for chemotherapy or frequent blood draws.

  • Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) - Destroying tumours using heat generated by radiofrequency waves.
  • Cryoablation - Using extreme cold to destroy abnormal tissue, often used for tumours.

  • Vertebroplasty/Kyphoplasty - Injecting bone cement into fractured vertebrae to relieve pain and stabilise the spine.
  • Biliary Intervention - Managing biliary obstructions through stenting or drainage.
