What is Orthopaedics?

In an orthopaedics department, a variety of procedures are performed to diagnose, treat, and manage musculoskeletal conditions.

Here are some common procedures

  • X-rays - Imaging to assess bone fractures, joint alignment, and other skeletal issues.
  • MRI and CT Scans - Advanced imaging techniques to evaluate soft tissues, ligaments, cartilage, and complex fractures.
  • Arthroscopy - A minimally invasive procedure using a camera to visualise the interior of a joint for diagnosis and treatment.

  • Fracture Repair -Surgical intervention to stabilise and heal broken bones using plates, screws, or rods.
  • Joint Replacement Surgery - Replacing damaged joints (e.g., hip, knee) with artificial implants to relieve pain and restore function.
  • Arthroscopy - Performing surgical procedures inside joints, such as meniscus repair or ligament reconstruction.
  • Spinal Surgery - Procedures like laminectomy or spinal fusion to address spinal disorders, including herniated discs or spinal stenosis.
  • Osteotomy - Restructuring bones to correct deformities or misalignments, often in the knee or hip.
  • Tendon Repair - Surgical repair of torn tendons, such as the rotator cuff or Achilles tendon.

  • Joint Injections - Administering corticosteroids or hyaluronic acid directly into joints to relieve pain and inflammation.
  • Physical Therapy - Developing rehabilitation plans to improve mobility, strength, and function after injury or surgery.

  • Emergency Fracture Care - Immediate treatment for fractures, including immobilisation and potential surgical intervention.
  • Dislocation Reduction - Realigning dislocated joints to restore normal function.

  • Monitoring Recovery - Observing patients for complications and managing pain post-surgery.
  • Rehabilitation - Guiding patients through physical therapy and exercises to regain strength and mobility.
