A thyroid nodule is a oval or round shaped swelling in thyroid gland, either palpable clinically or detected on an Ultrasound scan.

A thyroid nodule could be benign(non-cancerous) or cancerous. A thyroid nodule can also be asscociated with increases hormone secretion.

Small thyroid nodules may not have any symptoms. But the goitre or nodule is large, patient may experience difficulty in swallowing, difficulty in breathing, change in voice due to pressure exerted on the near by structures. Many a times patient present without any symptom other than just having a an anterior neck swelling.

Yes. Not all thyroid nodules are cancerous, but this can be confirmed after certain investigations .

No . Decision of surgery in case of benign nodules is taken depending on the hormone reports , size of the nodule /goitre, symptoms of the patient. But if the FNAC is cancerous, suspicious, surgery is the definitive treatment.

Hypocalcemia and change in voice are the two major complications of total thyroidectomy. But in hands of a trained endocrine surgeon the risks of these comolications is below 2%.

Parathyroid glands are four pea sized glands located on either of thyroid gland .These glands secrete hormone PTH which is assosciated with calcium metabolism/balance in our body.

Increased secretion of PTH from parathyroid d gland due to a tumour in any one of the parathyroid gland called as parathyroid adenoma or due to enlargement of all four parathyroid glands(parathyroid hypeplasia) can result in hypercalcemia and its related symptoms.

Bony pains, irritability, recurrent renal stones, constipation, heart burn , acidity, dyspepsia, pancreatitis, pathological bone fractures, etc..

No. But no breast cancer should be left unevaluated.

Breast cancer if caught at an early stage is completely treatable and the patient can lead a normal life with annual check ups.
