What is Abnormal Uterine Bleeding?

Abnormal Uterine Bleeding (AUB) is bleeding from the uterus that is longer than usual or that occurs at an irregular time. Bleeding may be heavier or lighter than usual and occur often or randomly.

There are a number of symptoms of Abnormal Uterine Bleeding, which may include
  • Bleeding after sex
  • Bleeding after menopause
  • Bleeding while pregnant
  • Bleeding before age 9
  • Heavier bleeding than usual
  • Spotting or bleeding between periods
  • Bleeding for more days than normal (menorrhagia)
  • Menstrual cycles longer than 35 days or shorter than 21 days

Complications of chronic abnormal uterine bleeding can include anemia, infertility, and endometrial cancer. Acute abnormal uterine bleeding, severe anemia, hypotension, shock, and even death may result if prompt treatment and supportive care are not initiated.

It may occur in pregnancy, secondary to hemostatic disorders, pathology of the genital tract, infections, systematic diseases, endocrine disturbance, obesity, stress, and extreme exercise account can all disrupt normal ovulatory function and may be considered as preventable risk factors for AUB

Surgical options include uterine artery embolization, endometrial ablation, or hysterectomy. Medical management options include a levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device (IUD), GnRH agonists, systemic progestins, and tranexamic acid with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
