What is Endocrinology?

In an Endocrinology department, a variety of procedures are performed to diagnose and treat disorders related to hormonal imbalances and endocrine glands.

Here are some common procedures

  • Blood Tests - Comprehensive hormonal panels to assess levels of hormones such as thyroid hormones, adrenal hormones, insulin, and sex hormones.
    • Thyroid Function Tests - Evaluating TSH, T3, and T4 levels to assess thyroid function.
    • Glucose Testing - Fasting glucose and HbA1c tests for diabetes diagnosis and management.
  • Urine Tests - 24-hour urine collection to measure hormone levels, such as cortisol, catecholamines, or creatinine clearance.
  • Imaging Studies
    • Ultrasound - Used to assess thyroid nodules or adrenal glands.
    • CT/MRI Scans - Imaging to evaluate pituitary tumours, adrenal masses, or other endocrine-related conditions.
  • Stimulation and Suppression Tests - Tests such as the ACTH stimulation test or dexamethasone suppression test to assess adrenal function and diagnose disorders like Cushing's syndrome or Addison's disease.

  • Thyroid Biopsy - Fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy of thyroid nodules to assess for malignancy.
  • Insulin Pump Therapy - Initiating and managing insulin pump therapy for patients with type 1 diabetes.
  • Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) - Installing CGM devices for real-time blood sugar monitoring in diabetic patients.

  • Radioactive Iodine Therapy - Administering radioactive iodine to treat hyperthyroidism or certain types of thyroid cancer.
