What is Common Cold?

Colds usually take a few days to fully develop. Typical symptoms include a stuffy or runny nose, sneezing, coughing and a sore throat. Sometimes a cold is also accompanied by a mild fever, weakness, a headache and joint pain. Occasionally, colds are mistaken for the flu.

A common complication is a sinus infection with a prolonged cough. If you have asthma, chronic bronchitis, or emphysema, the symptoms from those conditions may be worsened for many weeks even after the cold has gone away.

What causes the common cold? A cold is caused by any one of several viruses that causes inflammation of the membranes that line the nose and throat. It can result from any one of more than 200 different viruses. But, the rhinoviruses causes most colds.

Avoid close contact with people who have colds or other upper respiratory infections. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Don't smoke and avoid secondhand smoke.

  • Try other throat soothers.

  • Use a suction bulb for younger children.
