What is Coronary Heart Disease?

Coronary Heart Disease is the term that describes what happens when your heart's blood supply is blocked or interrupted by a build-up of fatty substances in the coronary arteries. Over time, the walls of your arteries can become furred up with fatty deposits.

You may also have some symptoms of a sudden heart problem, such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or neck pain, that go away with rest and come back with activity. These symptoms may get worse as the buildup of plaque continues to narrow the coronary arteries.

  • Heart failure.
  • Irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias).
  • Heart attack. A heart attack can happen if a cholesterol plaque breaks open and causes a blood clot to form.
  • Chest pain (angina). When the coronary arteries narrow, the heart may not get enough blood when it needs it most — like when exercising.
  • High cholesterol.
  • High lipoprotein (a).
  • Lack of regular exercise.
  • Diabetes.
  • Thrombosis.
  • Smoking. Smoking is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease.
  • High blood pressure. High blood pressure (hypertension) puts a strain on your heart and can lead to CHD.
