What is Endocrine Cancer?

An endocrine tumor is a growth that affects the parts of the body that secrete hormones. Because an endocrine tumor arises from cells that produce hormones, the tumor itself can produce hormones and cause serious illness.

Stage IV is divided into 2 substages: Stage IVA cancer has spread within the chest, such as the opposite lung or the lining of the heart or lung, and/or has spread to only 1 area outside of the chest. Stage IVB has spread outside of the chest, with more than 1 metastases outside the lung, in 1 or more organs.

Because there are no known controllable risk factors for neuroendocrine tumors, there is no way to prevent them. If you are at elevated risk for neuroendocrine tumors based on your family or personal health history, make an appointment with your doctor to discuss your risk factors and any health concerns you may have.

  • Hormone therapy: This may help stop the tumor from growing or to relieve symptoms caused by the tumor. If your thyroid was removed, you will receive thyroid hormone for life to help your body continue to function normally.
