What is Food Allergies?

Food allergy is an immune system reaction that happens soon after eating a certain food. Even a tiny amount of the allergy-causing food can trigger symptoms such as digestive problems, hives or swollen airways.

  • feeling dizzy or lightheaded.
  • itchy skin or a raised rash (hives)
  • swelling of the lips, face and eyes (angioedema)
  • coughing, wheezing, breathlessness, noisy breathing or a hoarse voice.
  • sneezing or an itchy, runny or blocked nose.
  • feeling sick or being sick.
  • tummy pain.
  • diarrhoea.
  • Hives
  • Wheezing
  • Digestive problems
  • Nausea
  • Rapid PULSE
  • Dizziness
  • Itching or swelling in your mouth
  • Low blood pressure
  • Diarrhea

When the immune system makes a type of antibody called immunoglobulin E (IgE) against a food allergen, it can lead to food allergy. A food allergy develops when a person eats, touches or inhales a protein in food called an allergen, and then the immune system makes a type of antibody against the allergen called IgE.

  • Having a history of asthma.
  • Being a teenager or younger.
  • Delaying use of epinephrine to treat your food allergy symptoms.
  • Not having hives or other skin symptoms.

How can I prevent food allergies? There is no known way to prevent food allergies in adults. In babies, breastfeeding in the first six months of life may prevent milk allergy. Early introduction of highly allergenic foods such as peanut protein and eggs into the diet may also have a preventative effect.

If you suspect you have a food allergy, avoid exposure to the food altogether until your appointment. If you do eat the food and have a mild reaction, nonprescription antihistamines may help relieve symptoms. If you have a more severe reaction and any symptoms of anaphylaxis, seek emergency help.
