What is Fungal Keratitis?

Fungal keratitis can develop quickly from an eye injury or contact lens use. It can cause blindness if it is not treated. In some cases, treatment cannot restore vision. In these cases, permanent vision impairment or blindness may occur.

Fungal keratitis is an infection of the cornea (the clear dome covering the colored part of the eye) that is caused by a fungus. Some fungi that can cause fungal keratitis include: Fusarium species. Aspergillus species.

The major risk factors for fungal keratitis are trauma (particularly with vegetative matter), previous penetrating keratoplasty (PK), ocular surface disease (OSD), chronic use of topical steroids or antibiotics, corneal anesthesia or hypesthesia, and systemic immunosuppression.

Fungal keratitis must be treated with prescription antifungal medicine for several months. Patients who do not get better with antifungal eye drops and oral medications may require surgery, including a cornea transplant.
