What is Gastroschisis?

Gastroschisis is a birth defect where a hole in the abdominal (belly) wall beside the belly button allows the baby's intestines to extend outside of the baby's body. The hole can be small or large and sometimes other organs, such as the stomach and liver, can be found outside of the baby's body as well.

  • Lump in the abdomen.
  • Intestine sticks through the abdominal wall near the umbilical cord.
  • Problems with movement and absorption in the gut due to the unprotected intestine being exposed to irritating amniotic fluid.

Complications include prolonged ileus, sepsis, associated intestinal atresias, malabsorption, wound infection, and necrotizing enterocolitis.

Gastroschisis is likely caused by a combination of genes and other factors, such as things the mother comes into contact within her environment, what the mother eats or drinks, or certain medicines used during pregnancy. Like many families affected by birth defects, CDC wants to find out what causes them.

Other case-control studies have indicated that having at least two children, each from a different father, is a further risk factor. Moreover, an increased risk of gastroschisis has been reported in women who smoke cigarettes or marijuana (26.5, 7.9 to 89.4) and women with a low body mass index.

There is no way to prevent gastroschisis from occurring besides staying as healthy as possible and avoiding substances that could potentially harm the baby. It's been suggested that folic acid can help prevent birth defects such as gastroschisis.

How is it diagnosed?

How is it diagnosed?

The treatment for gastroschisis is surgery. A surgeon will put the bowel back into the abdomen and close the defect, if possible. If the abdominal cavity is too small, a mesh sack is stitched around the borders of the defect and the edges of the defect are pulled up.

How is it treated?

Treatment for acute myeloid leukemia is vital. It varies with the patient and stage of the disease. Treatment options include

With a simple gastroschisis, treatment often is what's called a “primary repair.” This is a surgery where the bowel is placed back inside of the baby's belly and the abdominal opening is closed. When possible, this surgery is done the day your baby is born.
