What is HIV/AIDS?

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the body's immune system. If HIV is not treated, it can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). There is currently no effective cure

Causes

Having unprotected anal or vaginal sex. Receptive anal sex is the riskiest.
Using drugs and sharing needles or syringes.
Having a sexual partner with HIV who is not taking HIV medicines or who has a detectable viral load.
Having a sexually-transmitted disease (STD).

Prevention

Get tested for HIV.
Choose less risky sexual behaviors.
Use condoms every time you have sex.
Limit your number of sexual partners.
Get tested and treated for STDs.
Talk to your health care provider about pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

Risk Factors

Factors that may increase the risk of HIV transmission include sexually transmitted diseases, acute and late-stage HIV infection, and high viral load. Factors that may decrease the risk include condom use, male circumcision, antiretroviral treatment, and pre-exposure prophylaxis.

The treatment for HIV is called antiretroviral therapy (ART). ART involves taking a combination of HIV medicines (called an HIV treatment regimen) every day. ART is recommended for everyone who has HIV. ART cannot cure HIV, but HIV medicines help people with HIV live longer, healthier lives.
