Lip and oral cavity cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the lips or mouth. Tobacco and alcohol use can affect the risk of lip and oral cavity cancer. Signs of lip and oral cavity cancer include a sore or lump on the lips or in the mouth.
Lip cancer risk factors include excessive sun exposure and tobacco use. You may reduce your risk of lip cancer by protecting your face from the sun with a hat or sunblock, and by quitting smoking. Treatment for lip cancer usually involves surgery to remove the cancer.
If possible, limit time spent in the sun. If you are in the sun, wear a wide-brimmed hat and protect your lips with sunscreen or lip balm with an SPF of 30. Prevent HPV infection. Limit your risk for oral human papillomavirus (HPV) infection.
Surgery is used to remove the lip cancer and a margin of healthy tissue that surrounds it. The surgeon then repairs the lip to allow for normal eating, drinking and speaking. Techniques to reduce scarring also are used. For small lip cancers, repairing the lip after surgery may be a simple procedure.
