Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is supplementing women with hormones that are lost during the menopausal transition. To relieve the symptoms associated with menopause, conventional HRT includes an estrogen and progesterone component to mimic hormones created by the human ovary.
If you are healthy, most experts agree that HRT is safe to use at the lowest dose that helps for the shortest time needed. If you're 59 or older, or have been on hormones for 5 years, you should talk to your doctor about quitting
Complications of therapy include endometrial cancer, breast cancer, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and gallbladder disease. The last three complications presumably result from hepatic actions of estrogen replacement therapy.
Hormone replacement therapy is medication that contains female hormones. You take the medication to replace the estrogen that your body stops making during menopause. Hormone therapy is most often used to treat common menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes and vaginal discomfort.
There is convincing evidence that menopausal hormone therapy (with either combined estrogen and progesterone or estrogen alone) reduces the risk of bone fractures in postmenopausal individuals. There is some evidence that combined estrogen and progesterone may also reduce the risk of diabetes and colon cancer.
An increased risk of endometrial cancer (only if you still have your uterus and are not taking a progestin along with estrogen). Increased risk of blood clots and stroke. Increased chance of gallbladder/gallstone problems. Increased risk of dementia if hormone therapy is started after midlife
Estrogen therapy is the most effective treatment option for relieving menopausal hot flashes. Depending on your personal and family medical history, your doctor may recommend estrogen in the lowest dose and the shortest time frame needed to provide symptom relief for you.
