What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a debilitating condition that is a result of the sciatic nerve or sciatic nerve root pathology. Affected patients experience pain and paresthesias in the sciatic nerve distribution or an associated lumbosacral nerve root. Sciatica pain often is worsened with twisting, bending, or coughing

  • Weakness when bending the knee.
  • Difficulty bending the foot inward or down.
  • Difficulty walking on your toes.
  • Difficulty bending forward or backward.
  • Abnormal or weak reflexes.
  • Loss of sensation or numbness.
  • Pain when lifting the leg straight up when you're lying on the exam table.
  • Increased pain.
  • A slipped or herniated disc.
  • Loss of feeling or weakness in your affected leg.
  • Loss of bowel or bladder function.
  • Permanent nerve damage.

Sciatica happens when something presses or rubs on the sciatic nerve. Causes include: a slipped disc (the most common cause) – when a soft cushion of tissue between the bones in your spine pushes out. spinal stenosis – narrowing of the part of your spine where nerves pass through.

  • Exercise regularly. To keep the back strong, work the core muscles — the muscles in the abdomen and lower back needed for good posture and alignment.
  • Keep good posture when sitting. Choose a seat with good lower back support, armrests and a swivel base.
  • Use your body correctly
  • Age. Age-related changes in the spine, such as herniated disks and bone spurs, are the most common causes of sciatica.
  • Obesity. Being overweight increases stress on the spine.
  • Occupation.
  • Prolonged sitting.
  • Diabetes.

In microdiscectomy, a small part of the disc impinging the nerve root is removed to relieve pain. Microdiscectomy is a common surgical approach used to treat sciatica that is caused by a lumbar disc herniation.
