The skin prick test involves: Placing a small number of substances (allergens) that may be causing your symptoms on the skin, most often on the forearm, upper arm, or back. The skin is then pricked so the allergen goes under the skin's surface.
You'll feel a little prick when the substances are placed under your skin. After 15 minutes or so, the doctor will look for signs that you're having a reaction. Usually, your skin will get red or swollen if you're allergic to something in the test.
Skin tests may cause very mild discomfort when the skin is pricked. You may have symptoms such as itching, a stuffy nose, red watery eyes, or a skin rash if you're allergic to the substance in the test. In rare cases, people can have a whole-body allergic reaction (called anaphylaxis), which can be life threatening.
Skin prick test is the most effective diagnostic test to detect Ige mediated type I allergic reactions like allergic rhinitis, atopic asthma, acute urticaria, food allergy etc. Allergy refers to immediate (type I) hypersensitivity to environmental antigens.
The most common side effect of skin testing is slightly swollen, red, itchy bumps (wheals). These wheals may be most noticeable during the test. In some people, though, an area of swelling, redness and itching may develop a few hours after the test and remain for a couple of days
On the day of testing, don't use lotion or perfume on the area of skin where the test will be performed. You might test positive for an allergen but never show symptoms of that allergy. You may also get a false positive or a false negative.
A skin prick test, also called a puncture or scratch test, checks for immediate allergic reactions to as many as 50 different substances at once. This test is usually done to identify allergies to pollen, mold, pet dander, dust mites and foods. In adults, the test is usually done on the forearm.
