What is Sore Throat?

A sore throat can make it painful to swallow. A sore throat can also feel dry and scratchy. Sore throat can be a symptom of strep throat, the common cold, allergies, or other upper respiratory tract illness. Sore throat caused by a virus or the bacteria called group A Streptococcus can have similar symptoms.

  • Pain that worsens with swallowing or talking.
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Sore, swollen glands in your neck or jaw.
  • Swollen, red tonsils.
  • White patches or pus on your tonsils.
  • A hoarse or muffled voice.
  • Abscesses (pockets of pus) around the tonsils or in the neck.
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck.
  • Sinus infections.
  • Ear infections.
  • Rheumatic fever (a disease that can affect the heart, joints, brain, and skin).
  • Post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (a kidney disease).
  • Allergies. Allergies to pet dander, molds, dust, and pollen can cause a sore throat.
  • Dryness. Dry indoor air can make your throat feel rough and scratchy.
  • Irritants.
  • Muscle strain.
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
  • HIV infection.
  • Tumors.
  • Age. Children and teens are most likely to develop sore throats.
  • Exposure to tobacco smoke.
  • Allergies.
  • Exposure to chemical irritants.
  • Chronic or frequent sinus infections.
  • Close quarters.
  • Weakened immunity.
  • Clean your hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who have sore throats, colds, or other upper respiratory infections.
  • Don't smoke and avoid exposure to secondhand smoke.

How is it treated?

Treatment for acute myeloid leukemia is vital. It varies with the patient and stage of the disease. Treatment options include

  • Drink soothing liquids.
  • Gargle several times a day with warm salt water (1/2 tsp or 3 grams of salt in 1 cup or 240 milliliters of water).
  • Suck on hard candies or throat lozenges.
  • Use of a cool-mist vaporizer or humidifier can moisten the air and soothe a dry and painful throat.
