What is Spinal Tumor?

A tumor forms when an abnormal cell grows to form a mass of abnormal cells. Spinal cord tumors are tumors that form on the spinal cord or in the area around it. A spinal cord tumor may be cancerous (malignant) or noncancerous (benign).

There are a number of symptoms of Spinal Tumor, which may include
  • Radiculopathy (pinching of the nerve roots)
  • Myelopathy (spinal cord compression)
  • Bowel and bladder issues due to compression of the nerves that provide sensation and function to these organs
  • Numbness, tingling and muscle weakness
  • Difficulty walking
  • Paralysis

  • Myelopathy (spinal cord compression)
  • Bowel and bladder issues due to compression of the nerves that provide sensation and function to these organs.
  • Numbness, tingling and muscle weakness.
  • Difficulty walking.
  • Paralysis.
Causes

The cause of primary spinal tumors is unknown. Some primary spinal tumors occur with certain inherited gene mutations. Spinal tumors can be located: Inside the spinal cord (intramedullary)

Risk factors
  • Radiation exposure
  • Family history
  • Having a weakened immune system
  • Factors with uncertain, controversial, or unproven effects on brain tumor risk
Prevention

Prevention. Other than radiation exposure, there are no known lifestyle-related or environmental causes of brain and spinal cord tumors, so at this time there is no known way to protect against most of these tumors.

How is it diagnosed?

How is it diagnosed?

Primary (non-metastatic) spinal tumors may be removed through complete en bloc resection for a possible cure. In patients with metastatic tumors, treatment is primarily palliative, with the goal of restoring or preserving neurological function, stabilizing the spine and alleviating pain.

How is it treated?

Treatment for acute myeloid leukemia is vital. It varies with the patient and stage of the disease. Treatment options include

During surgery, performed using general anesthesia, the surgeon makes an incision in the portion of the back where the tumor is located and carefully removes as much of the tumor as possible without harming the spinal cord or other nerves.
