What is Stomach Ulcers?

Stomach ulcers, also known as peptic ulcers, are open sores that develop on the inner lining of the stomach, the upper part of the small intestine (duodenum), or the esophagus. These ulcers can cause discomfort and, if left untreated, may lead to serious complications.

Stomach ulcers can induce a burning or gnawing pain in the upper abdomen. Other symptoms may include indigestion, bloating, nausea, and, in some instances, vomiting. Severe ulcers can lead to bleeding, which may present as black or bloody stools, or perforation, causing severe abdominal pain.

Complications associated with stomach ulcers can encompass bleeding, which can be life-threatening if not promptly addressed. Perforation, signifying a hole in the stomach lining, can lead to peritonitis, a severe abdominal infection. Prolonged ulcers may result in gastric outlet obstruction, impeding the exit of food from the stomach.

How is it diagnosed?

Treatment for stomach ulcers typically involves a combination of medications:

  • Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are employed to reduce the production of stomach acid.
  • Antibiotics are prescribed if the ulcer is associated with H. pylori infection.
  • Antacids and histamine-2 receptor antagonists (H2 blockers) are used to alleviate symptoms.

Lifestyle adjustments, such as avoiding trigger foods, reducing stress, and discontinuing nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and alcohol, can help manage ulcers. In severe cases or when complications arise, surgical intervention may be necessary to remove the affected tissue or repair perforations.
