What is Thyroid Cancer?

Thyroid cancer is a growth of cells that starts in the thyroid. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck, just below the Adam's apple. The thyroid produces hormones that regulate heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and weight. Thyroid cancer might not cause any symptoms at first.

  • Hoarseness.
  • Swollen glands in the neck.
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Pain in the throat or neck.
  • A cough that persists and is not caused by a cold.
  • A lump in the front of the neck, near the Adam's apple.

Most people with thyroid cancer have no known risk factors, so it is not possible to prevent most cases of this disease. Radiation exposure, especially in childhood, is a known thyroid cancer risk factor. Because of this, doctors no longer use radiation to treat less serious diseases.
