What is Uveitis?

Uveitis is inflammation inside your eye. Inflammationhappens when  usually your immune system is fighting an infection. Sometimes uveitis means your immune system is fighting an eye infection — but it can also happen when your immune system attacks healthy tissue in your eyes

  • Eye redness.
  • Eye pain.
  • Light sensitivity.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Decreased vision.
  • Dark, floating spots in your field of vision (floaters).
  • Retinal swelling (macular edema).
  • Retinal scarring.
  • Glaucoma.
  • Cataracts.
  • Optic nerve damage.
  • Retinal detachment.
  • Permanent vision loss.
  • AIDS.
  • Ankylosing spondylitis.
  • Behcet's disease.
  • Lupus.
  • Multiple sclerosis.
  • Psoriasis.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Sarcoidosis.

Your health care provider can screen for uveitis during a regular eye exam. If you have any underlying conditions, treating them can help prevent uveitis. Avoiding some medications, such as the antibiotic rifabutin, may also help prevent uveitis.

An infection, such as cat-scratch disease, herpes zoster, syphilis, toxoplasmosis or tuberculosis. Medication side effect. Eye injury or surgery. Very rarely, a cancer that affects the eye, such as lymphoma.

Treatment is supportive care to reduce the discomfort and treat the underlying cause

A common treatment is eye drops that ease the inflammation. If uveitis is a result of an infection, antibiotics or antiviral medication may be prescribed.

How is it treated?

Rarely, an operation called a vitrectomy may be needed to treat uveitis. It's usually only recommended if you have repeated or severe uveitis, or if the condition is caused by certain infections. A vitrectomy involves gently sucking out the jelly-like substance that fills the inside of the eye (vitreous humour).
