What is von Willebrand disease ?

Von Willebrand disease (VWD) is a blood disorder in which the blood does not clot properly. Blood contains many proteins that help the blood clot when needed. One of these proteins is called von Willebrand factor (VWF).

There are a number of symptoms of Von Willebrand , which may include
  • Excessive bleeding from an injury or after surgery or dental work.
  • Frequent nosebleeds that don't stop within 10 minutes.
  • Heavy or long menstrual bleeding.
  • Heavy bleeding during labor and delivery.
  • Blood in your urine or stool.

Causes

Von Willebrand disease is a bleeding disorder caused by the qualitative or quantitative deficiency of the pro-von Willebrand factor. Affected people may complain of excessive bruising, prolonged bleeding from mucosal surfaces, and prolonged bleeding after minor trauma.

Risk Factors

The main risk factor for von Willebrand disease is having a family history of it. Parents pass the gene for the disease to their children. Rarely, the disease skips generations.

Prevention

If you plan to have children and have a family history of von Willebrand disease, consider genetic counseling. If you carry the gene for von Willebrand disease, you can pass it on to your offspring, even if you don't have symptoms.
