What is Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB)?

In a Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary (HPB) department, various procedures are performed to diagnose and treat conditions related to the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and bile ducts.

Here are some common procedures

  • Imaging Studies
    • Ultrasound - Non-invasive imaging to evaluate liver, gallbladder, and pancreatic conditions.
    • CT Scan - Detailed imaging for assessing tumours, cysts, and other abnormalities in the HPB system.
    • MRI - Advanced imaging to evaluate liver lesions and biliary obstructions.
  • Endoscopic Procedures
    • Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) - A procedure that combines endoscopy and fluoroscopy to diagnose and treat conditions of the bile and pancreatic ducts, including stone removal and stent placement.
    • Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) - An endoscopic procedure that uses ultrasound to obtain images of the pancreas and surrounding tissues, often used for guiding biopsies.
  • Liver Biopsy - Obtaining a tissue sample from the liver to diagnose liver diseases, including cirrhosis, hepatitis, and tumours.

  • Hepatectomy - Surgical removal of a portion of the liver, often performed for liver tumours or metastasis.
  • Pancreatectomy - Surgical removal of part or all of the pancreas, typically for pancreatic cancer or severe pancreatitis.
    • Whipple Procedure (Pancreaticoduodenectomy) - Removal of the head of the pancreas, duodenum, gallbladder, and part of the bile duct.
  • Cholecystectomy - Removal of the gallbladder, usually performed for gallstones or inflammation.
    • Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy - A minimally invasive technique for gallbladder removal.
  • Biliary Reconstruction - Surgical procedures to repair or reconstruct the bile ducts, often following injury or disease.

  • Percutaneous Transhepatic Cholangiography (PTC) - An imaging procedure to visualise the bile ducts, often used to relieve obstructions.
  • Biliary Stenting - Placing a stent in the bile ducts to relieve obstructions and improve bile flow.
