What is Medical Gastroenterology?

In a Medical Gastroenterology department, a variety of procedures are performed to diagnose, treat, and manage disorders of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and liver.

Here are some common procedures

  • Endoscopy
    • Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) - Examining the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum using a flexible endoscope. It’s used to diagnose conditions like GERD, ulcers, and tumours.
    • Colonoscopy - Examining the entire colon and rectum to detect polyps, cancer, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Biopsies can also be performed during this procedure.
    • Flexible Sigmoidoscopy - Similar to colonoscopy but focuses on the sigmoid colon and rectum.
  • Imaging Studies
    • Ultrasound - Non-invasive imaging to assess liver, gallbladder, and pancreas conditions.
    • CT Scan and MRI - Advanced imaging techniques to evaluate abdominal and pelvic organs, detect tumours, and assess inflammatory conditions.
  • Biopsies
    • Endoscopic Biopsy - Obtaining tissue samples from the GI tract during endoscopic procedures for histopathological examination.
    • Liver Biopsy - Sampling liver tissue to diagnose liver diseases, such as hepatitis or cirrhosis.
  • Functional Tests
    • pH Monitoring - Assessing acid levels in the oesophagus to evaluate gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
    • Motility Studies - Measuring the movement of food through the GI tract, often done with manometry.

  • Polypectomy - Removing polyps during colonoscopy to prevent colorectal cancer.
  • Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) - Removing cancerous or precancerous lesions from the GI tract.
  • Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) - Diagnosing and treating biliary and pancreatic duct conditions, such as stones or strictures.
