What is Neurology?

In a Neurology department, various procedures are performed to diagnose and manage neurological disorders.

Here are some common procedures

  • Electroencephalogram (EEG) - Measures electrical activity in the brain to diagnose conditions like epilepsy, seizures, and sleep disorders.
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) - Provides detailed images of the brain and spinal cord to identify tumours, strokes, multiple sclerosis, and other abnormalities.
  • Computed Tomography (CT) Scan - Rapid imaging technique used to detect haemorrhages, tumours, and structural changes in the brain.
  • Lumbar Puncture (Spinal Tap) - Collects cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for analysis to diagnose infections, bleeding, or neurological disorders like multiple sclerosis.
  • Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) - Evaluates the speed and strength of electrical signals in peripheral nerves to diagnose conditions like neuropathies.
  • Electromyography (EMG) - Assesses the electrical activity of muscles, helping diagnose neuromuscular disorders like myasthenia gravis or muscular dystrophy.

  • Botulinum Toxin Injections - Used to treat conditions like chronic migraines, spasticity, and certain movement disorders by temporarily paralysing targeted muscles.
  • Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) - Non-invasive procedure that stimulates nerve cells in the brain, often used to treat depression.
  • Intrathecal Drug Delivery - Catheter placement into the spinal canal for direct medication delivery to manage conditions like chronic pain or spasticity.
