What is Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R)?

In a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) department, also known as physiatry, various procedures are performed to enhance recovery and improve the quality of life for patients with physical impairments or disabilities.

Here are some common procedures

  • Comprehensive Evaluations - Detailed assessments to evaluate a patient's physical, functional, and cognitive abilities, including history taking and physical examinations.
  • Functional Assessments - Measuring specific capabilities, such as mobility, strength, endurance, and activities of daily living (ADLs).

  • Therapeutic Exercise - Developing personalised exercise programs to improve strength, flexibility, and endurance, tailored to the patient’s condition.
  • Manual Therapy - Techniques such as massage, mobilisation, and manipulation to relieve pain and improve mobility.
  • Electrotherapy - Utilising electrical modalities (e.g., TENS, ultrasound) for pain relief, tissue healing, and muscle stimulation.

  • Injections - Administering corticosteroids, hyaluronic acid, or other medications into joints, muscles, or nerves to reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Nerve Blocks - Targeting specific nerves to alleviate chronic pain conditions.
  • Botulinum Toxin Injections - Using Botox to manage spasticity or muscle hyperactivity in conditions like cerebral palsy or after strokes.

  • Occupational Therapy - Working with patients to improve their ability to perform daily activities and enhance their independence.
  • Speech Therapy - Addressing communication and swallowing difficulties, particularly in patients recovering from neurological injuries or surgeries.
  • Gait Training - Assisting patients in improving walking patterns and stability, often using assistive devices.

  • Fitting for Orthotics and Prosthetics - Designing and fitting custom devices to support mobility and function.
