What is Radiation Oncology?

In a Radiation Oncology department, a variety of procedures are performed to treat cancer using radiation therapy.

Here are some common procedures

  • Consultation - Comprehensive evaluation of the patient’s medical history, physical examination, and discussion of treatment options.
  • Imaging Studies
    • CT Scans - Detailed imaging to help delineate tumour size and location.
    • MRI and PET Scans - Used to assess tumour characteristics and metastasis.
  • Simulation - A planning session where imaging is performed to create a treatment plan, including patient positioning and marking the treatment area on the skin.

  • External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT)
    • Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) - Advanced technique that allows for precise targeting of tumours while minimising damage to surrounding tissues.
    • Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) - Delivers high doses of radiation to small, well-defined tumours in fewer sessions.
  • Brachytherapy - Involves placing radioactive sources directly inside or near the tumour (e.g., seeds for prostate cancer or applicators for gynaecological cancers).
  • Radioimmunotherapy - Combination of radiation therapy and immunotherapy using radioactive antibodies to target cancer cells.

  • Treatment Administration - Supervision and delivery of prescribed radiation doses, ensuring patient safety and comfort during the process.
  • Monitoring - Regular monitoring of the patient’s response to treatment and any side effects experienced.

  • Management of Side Effects - Providing supportive care for side effects of radiation, such as skin irritation, fatigue, or gastrointestinal issues.
  • Follow-Up Care - Ongoing assessment of treatment effectiveness, monitoring for recurrence, and adjusting care plans as necessary.
