What is Surgical Gastroenterology?

In a Surgical Gastroenterology department, a range of surgical procedures is performed to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, liver, pancreas, and biliary system.

Here are some common procedures

  • Endoscopy
    • Upper Endoscopy (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy) - Visualises the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum to diagnose conditions like ulcers or tumours.
    • Colonoscopy - Examines the colon for abnormalities, including polyps, inflammation, or cancer.
  • Imaging Studies
    • CT Scan - Detailed imaging to assess the abdomen and pelvis for tumours, abscesses, or other abnormalities.
    • MRI - Used for imaging soft tissues, particularly in the liver and pancreas.

  • Appendectomy - Removal of the appendix, often performed laparoscopically for appendicitis.
  • Cholecystectomy - Surgical removal of the gallbladder, typically due to gallstones or cholecystitis, usually done laparoscopically.
  • Hernia Repair - Surgical correction of various types of hernias, such as inguinal, femoral, or umbilical hernias, often using laparoscopic techniques.
  • Bowel Resection - Removal of a section of the intestine due to conditions like Crohn's disease, diverticulitis, or cancer.
  • Gastrectomy - Partial or total removal of the stomach, often performed for cancer or severe ulcers.
  • Pancreatectomy - Surgical removal of part or all of the pancreas, typically due to cancer or pancreatitis.
  • Liver Resection - Removal of a portion of the liver, often performed for tumours or metastatic disease.
  • Whipple Procedure (Pancreaticoduodenectomy) - Complex surgery involving removal of the head of the pancreas, duodenum, gallbladder, and part of the bile duct, usually for pancreatic cancer.
  • Fistula Repair - Surgical correction of abnormal connections between organs, often involving the intestines.

  • Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) - A procedure to diagnose and treat conditions of the bile ducts and pancreas, including stone removal and stenting.
  • Laparoscopic Surgery - Minimally invasive techniques used for various gastrointestinal procedures, enhancing recovery and reducing complications.

  • Monitoring Recovery - Close observation of vital signs and gastrointestinal function in the postoperative period.
  • Pain Management - Implementing strategies for effective pain control using medications and regional anaesthesia techniques.

  • Preoperative Consultations - Discussing the surgical procedure, risks, and expected outcomes with patients and their families.
  • Postoperative Instructions - Providing guidance on recovery, dietary modifications, activity restrictions, and signs of complications to watch for at home.

These procedures are critical for effectively diagnosing and treating a wide range of gastrointestinal disorders, helping to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
