What is Surgical Oncology?

In a Surgical Oncology department, a variety of procedures are performed to diagnose and treat cancer.

Here are some common procedures

  • Biopsy
    • Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) - A thin needle is used to extract tissue or fluid from a suspicious area for analysis.
    • Core Needle Biopsy - A larger needle is used to remove a core of tissue for diagnosis.
    • Incisional or Excisional Biopsy - Surgical removal of a portion or all of a tumour for pathological examination.
  • Imaging Studies
    • CT Scan - Provides detailed images of the body to assess the extent of cancer.
    • MRI - Used for detailed imaging of soft tissues and brain tumours.
    • PET Scan - Helps in detecting cancer and assessing treatment response by identifying metabolic activity.

  • Tumour Resection - Removal of the tumour along with surrounding healthy tissue to ensure complete excision. This can be done for various cancers, including breast, lung, colon, and skin cancers.
  • Mastectom - Surgical removal of one or both breasts, often performed for breast cancer. Variants include total mastectomy and lumpectomy (partial mastectomy).
  • Lymph Node Dissection - Removal of lymph nodes to check for cancer spread, commonly performed during breast or melanoma surgeries.
  • Colorectal Surgery - Resection of tumours in the colon or rectum, which may include partial or total colectomy.
  • Pancreatectomy - Removal of part or all of the pancreas, often performed for pancreatic cancer.
  • Gastrectomy - Partial or total removal of the stomach, typically for gastric cancer.
  • Thyroidectomy - Removal of part or all of the thyroid gland, often performed for thyroid cancer.
  • Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery - Minimally invasive techniques used for various oncological surgeries, reducing recovery time and complications.
