What is Urology?

In a Urology department, a variety of procedures are performed to diagnose and treat conditions related to the urinary tract and male reproductive system.

Here are some common procedures

  • Urinalysis - A laboratory test of urine to detect signs of infection, kidney disease, or diabetes.
  • maging Studies
    • Ultrasound - Non-invasive imaging used to assess the kidneys, bladder, and prostate.
    • CT Scan - Detailed imaging for evaluating tumors, stones, or anatomical abnormalities.
    • MRI - Used for assessing soft tissue structures, particularly in cases of prostate cancer.
  • Cystoscopy - A procedure using a thin tube with a camera (cystoscope) to examine the bladder and urethra for abnormalities, such as tumors or stones.
  • Urodynamic Studies - Tests to evaluate bladder function and measure the pressure and volume of urine during filling and voiding.

  • Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) - A minimally invasive procedure to remove prostate tissue in cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) to relieve urinary obstruction.
  • Lithotripsy - A non-invasive procedure that uses shock waves to break up kidney stones into smaller pieces that can be passed more easily.
  • Ureteroscopy - A procedure to remove or break up stones in the ureter using a thin scope inserted through the urinary tract.
  • Cystectomy - Surgical removal of part or all of the bladder, often performed for bladder cancer.
  • Nephrectomy - Removal of a kidney, typically due to cancer, severe injury, or donor purposes.
  • Orchiectomy - Surgical removal of one or both testicles, often performed for testicular cancer or hormone-related conditions.
  • Penile Surgery - Procedures for conditions such as Peyronie's disease or penile cancer, including penile reconstruction or amputation.
  • Vasectomy - A surgical procedure for male sterilisation that involves cutting and sealing the vas deferens to prevent sperm from entering the ejaculate.
