The estimated number of children born with congenital heart disease in India is more than 200,000 per year. Of these, about one-fifth are likely to have serious defect, requiring an intervention in the first year of life.
Congenital heart disease may be suspected during a routine sonography of the baby in the womb. Fetal echocardiography is a specialized test done by a pediatric cardiologist at around 18 to 22 weeks of the pregnancy to confirm the exact diagnosis and counsel parents regarding treatment and prognosis once the baby is born.
As soon as a heart disease is suspected in a child, she/ he should be referred to pediatric cardiology.
