About the Specialty

The specialty of Pediatric Cardiac Sciences deals with heart diseases in children. Children can be born with structural differences in the heart which include holes in the heart, problems with the arteries and veins emerging from and draining into the heart and the issues of heart failure or bluish discoloration arising from these problems.

Newborn Heart Surgery, Congenital Heart Surgery, Surgery for Complex Heart Defects.

Catheter Interventions

Include closure of common heart defects without surgery (ASD, PDA and VSD), newborn interventions (balloon dilation of valves, duct stenting), interventions in adult patient who underwent surgery for congenital heart disease.

Fetal Cardiac Clinic

The services include prenatal diagnosis and counselling of pregnant mothers with suspected heart defect in the fetus and prenatal treatment for fetuses with cardiac rhythm disorders.

FAQs

The estimated number of children born with congenital heart disease in India is more than 200,000 per year. Of these, about one-fifth are likely to have serious defect, requiring an intervention in the first year of life.

Congenital heart disease may be suspected during a routine sonography of the baby in the womb. Fetal echocardiography is a specialized test done by a pediatric cardiologist at around 18 to 22 weeks of the pregnancy to confirm the exact diagnosis and counsel parents regarding treatment and prognosis once the baby is born.

As soon as a heart disease is suspected in a child, she/ he should be referred to pediatric cardiology.

Inability to gain weight, bluish discoloration of lips and mouth, breathlessness on exertion, fainting episodes, frequent chest infections.
