FAQs

We will meet for an extensive interview and psychiatric evaluation in which we will discuss some information such as your history, symptoms, and family dynamics. Within this first session together, we will then determine the best plan of action to move forward.

Confidentiality is very important and something taken very seriously in the office. No information regarding what happens within the work that we do together will be revealed unless you have signed the Authorization to Disclose Information form. In that case, only the specific information we agree upon will be released and only to the party you have specified. In the instance that you are in danger of harming yourself or another, then I am obligated by law to alert authorities.

There are no precise determinations that I can make regarding the length of your treatment. Generally speaking, the longer you have had your mental illness not medically acknowledged, the longer the treatment will take. Certain conditions do not require a lot of time to treat, and others considerably more. Certain mental illnesses require just a couple of visits, and others require life long maintenance. I believe that you should seek treatment as soon as possible, for the best outcome.

We will discuss guidance and protocols to adhere to both inside and outside of the office. Follow the treatment regimen and plan of action prescribed. Make sure that you follow the medication regimen, attend the psychotherapy and counseling sessions, and keep your life as balanced as you can. It is very important to try and avoid stressful situations, let your loved ones help you whenever possible, and seek help the moment you feel like your mental illness is coming back or getting worse.

There are a few components that play a part in the recurrence of mental illness. Coexisting stressors in life: oftentimes, a mental illness will recur if there are additional life stressors (family or marital problems, starting a new job, losing someone close to you). Age: more often than not, if someone is diagnosed with a mental illness earlier than later in life, there is a higher likelihood of the illness recurring. Diagnosis: Some mental illnesses are more common to recur than others. Some of the ones on the list that are more likely to come back are: OCD, drug and alcohol addiction, eating disorders, and bipolar disorder.

Life comes with ups and downs that do not necessarily require medical treatment. However, when a person notices changes in their behavior or feelings of distress that last for a long time, that might be a sign of mental issues.

Figuring out what type of treatment one needs can be daunting when a person or one of their loved ones is battling a mental issue. Patients are advised to talk to their doctor for a referral to a psychiatrist. Online resources can also be used to narrow down mental health professionals in a particular area.

If a person has suicidal thoughts or is at risk of hurting others, seek help immediately. Dial 911 or call for emergency psychiatric services.

There are various professionals that provide mental health services. Look for a licensed professional when seeking mental health treatment.

Testing refers to when the mental health worker tries to learn more about a patient's condition. It can highlight a patient's strengths and weaknesses, making it easier to make a diagnosis based on the patient's symptoms. Testing also provides additional information about behavioral problems. Screening occurs when tests and instruments are used to identify people who may have a higher risk of developing certain mental health conditions. For example, some court systems use screening to identify issues in young offenders so they can get the treatment they need. Assessment refers to using a combination of instruments or tests to evaluate a person's mental health. It helps to pinpoint each patient's needs. An evaluation is more thorough than the other three that have been mentioned –– it includes screening, assessment, testing and interviews with the patient and those around them. It also includes the patient's background and past events that might have shaped their mental picture.

There are various ways to treat mental issues. One way is in the form of outpatient treatments, which involve seeing a doctor once a week for talking therapy. Patients who have suicidal thoughts or are exhibiting violent outburst are often hospitalized until their condition improves, while others are prescribed medication.

A psychiatrist is qualified to write prescriptions, and there is a vast range of medications that can be used to manage mental health issues. Most of these medications will not significantly alter the patient's personality, but they can come with symptoms like a loss of appetite or drowsiness.
